Volcanoes can erupt. Boom! Lava shoots into the sky. So do bits of rock. The lava flows down the side of the volcano. It is very hot.

Volcanoes can be quiet. Not all volcanoes are active. A dormant volcano is one that has not erupted for a long time. An extinct volcano will never erupt again. Now it is just a mountain.

People study volcanoes. Volcanologists are scientists. They watch volcanoes to see if they will erupt soon. They warn people nearby when an eruption might happen. This can save lives.
